From the outset, it is really important to ask yourself some questions including:

What kind of entertainment suits my personal taste?

Some people love live interpretations of songs while others prefer to hear the original versions. If you love the atmosphere and great vibe of live Cairns musicians, a live acoustic duo or band might be the way to go. Better yet, choosing a Cairns wedding entertainer that can do both Live music and DJ music will give you the best of both worlds and offer you and your guests a great variety on the day and therefore more likely to appeal to the vast majority of your guests.

What is my budget?

It is important to allow enough room in the budget for the kind of entertainment that you feel will suit your event best. A Cairns DJ will generally cost less than a live entertainment option and is a great alternative if you have a smaller budget for entertainment. The cost of live music will vary depending on the number of musicians you hire. For example, a live solo artist or acoustic duo will usually be significantly less than a full four or five piece band, but you may love the vibe a full band creates and justify the cost if it’s what you really want. Never underestimate the power of great entertainment to make your wedding fun, lively and memorable, therefore be sure to allow enough room in your budget to cover a great band or DJ.

How much space will the musicians/entertainer(s) need?

It’s important that you consider if your preferred entertainment will fit well within the space available in your venue. For example, if your wedding is taking place in a restaurant or smaller function room, it may be best to hire a Soloist, Duo or DJ as opposed to a 4 or 5 piece band. Generally the more musicians you have, the more space will be required and if you are having a band it would be wise to check in with them about how much space they will need. If your venue is quite large you will have a bit more flexibility with regards to space.

Will the entertainment suit my venue?

When hiring wedding music, it is also important to find out from your venue if they have any noise restrictions or DB (decibel) requirements. Some venues actually use a DB meter to measure the sound levels and make sure the music volume is within their allowable range. If your venue does have sound restrictions, they may also have restrictions as to the kind of entertainment they allow, for example, no DJs or Bands with percussion. Before booking, it’s recommended to do your research and check in with the venue’s wedding coordinator so that you don’t secure an entertainer who may not be permitted to perform for you.

Will the music suit the guests attending- ages and demographics?

If you are having a wide age range of guests attending, you may want to confirm that your chosen Cairns wedding entertainer has a wide range of repertoire to suit a wide range of ages. Or if you come from a specific cultural background, you may wish the band or DJ to play music that is culture-specific to you. If your guest list is mostly young, you may wish to confirm if the musicians sing and/or DJ your favorite latest hits. Some bands play one specific genre. If this is the case, will you be happy with that style all night or would you like to also have them DJ different styles in between?

Can I see the band or DJ perform live?

If possible, go see the duo, band or DJ performing live somewhere local to you as this is the best way to find out what they actually sound like and the vibe they actually create. Search your local gig guide or get in touch with the artist direct to see if and where they are playing next. If this is not possible, do your best to watch video footage of them and/or listen to their audio recordings.

As a celebrant, I recently had the opportunity to visit Cairns Secret Garden Wedding Venue, a private and exclusive garden location on a stunning private acreage in Brinsmead. My clients chose this venue because they were after something a little bit different and unique that they hadn’t seen before.

A beautiful and secluded alcove with a lush rainforest backdrop, this is an ideal venue if you are looking for somewhere private, tropical and romantic.

There are two main vantage points for your ceremony backdrop, a beautiful wooden deck with a large permanent arbor that can be decorated to your theme; and on the on the opposite side, the shade of the large canopy of a Cassia tree.

There is access to power on both sides, a great bonus if your celebrant would like to plug in their PA system or if you have live musicians that also require power.
